It is not vain; just very European. One should have them done to mark rites of passage by an artist in an unexpected style; an impression is as valid as a clear depiction.
Holiday snaps do not count. Holiday snaps or studio photographs printed onto canvas are not portraits, they are an abomination.
I would have liked to have been painted by Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, and Francis Bacon.

I'm far too vain to allow Kahlo, Dalí or Bacon to record my fast eroding visage. That being said, if I could conjure any artist to do me (complimentary) justice, I'd pick (1) John Singer Sargent, (2) Bernard Boutet de Monvel, or (3) Hans Holbein the Younger. Holbein might not be entirely complimentary with his brush, but the details of his paintings are what fascinate me, so I'd be happy if he painted my double chin ... as long as he got the texture of the fabrics right.
Mitchell - Ha! Great choices - Sargent would be magnificent.
Based on your criteria, I would suit Boldini, Foujita, and Velasquez.
But, what is it Balenciaga said? Something about "flattery being for court photographers"?

I would have liked to have been painted by Sargent. Or perhaps Mary Cassatt. The again, perhaps Sorolla.
