Guess who I saw today?

8 Women

Catherine Deneuve for Louis Vuitton

I feel that I should be excited, but I am not. And, I am not really sure why I am not.

She was browsing with the dealer next to us, who has nice things. If one likes that sort of thing. This particlar dealer's stock and trade is hardly what one could call challenging, either visually or intellectually. Yet, they all seem to find it fascinating. I find it pedestrian. To say I have never really been taken with him or his particular clientele would be putting it mildly. The men tend to wear grey shoes or elasticated trousers with many pockets. I am just waiting for the day one of them turns up wearing both of the offending items. As for the women, well, suffice it to say they all look like they do their own hair.

Now, to see one of the most beautiful and celebrated women of French cinema, possibly the world, browsing amongst the Victoriana was a little more than dumbfounding. I recognised the voice, which can only be described as being like warm honey, before the face. She is still undeniably beautiful in that remote patrician way.
I just can't seem to get past her choice of...I don't even know what to call them... Dare I say? Knick-knacks?

Even with the extensive work she has had done over the years, CD remains staggeringly beautiful, I think. I have seen her in the flea market in NYC also. It is a bit of a jolt. Knickknacks? Really? With apologies to Noel Coward, there can be an extraordinary potency to cheap things.

AL - I was surprised by the work. I didn't think she would be that type of woman. As for the knick-knacks - weren't cheap, they were just so ordinary and dreary.

Sigh...one always hopes that icons will have the taste one imagines. C'est la vie.

KD - I know - but she's literally the face of France! Once the muse of YSL....It's just not right.

No, I just won't believe it. She must have been shopping for someone else.

Her work is pretty good -- my guess is that she's mostly relying on fillers and less on surgery.

mamacita - in this instance I am more than willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It may have been the person with her who was bying the tat and not her. I hope.

I recall a delightful interview with La Deneuve and Terry Gross of the radio program "Fresh Air." Ms Gross did everything but ask her straight out, Have you had work done, and Ms Deneuve modestly skirted the issue repeatedly, merely stating (several times) that she could understand if an actress did resort to plastic surgery. It was the most amazing non-assertion I'd ever heard! Mon Dieu! Now, I must admit: I have seen "The Hunger" more than once. Way more. J'adore!

AL - I don't think it is just her physicality that makes her beautiful - there is something more, so much more.

Oh yes. So much more. But, I hope I don't sound crass, 'Wow!' Aesthete, "The Hunger?" I even play the title song by Bowie in my alone moments....

HOBAC, not to hijack the comments thread, but I thought you might appreciate the following. He's a very good blogger (writer really) and an artist to boot:

EaEL - thanks for the link - looks like it may be a "rabbit hole" experience.

It is. In a very good way. One of those things I've read and thought "Why can't I write that way?" Be sure and read his posts from Europe.
