Selection of Peter Beals' Classic Roses

I have always had a weakness for old fashioned roses. Only one thing could make me happier, and that would be a gardener to tend them.

love the old ones you find along country lanes and in graveyards. we had a whole long porch with roses growing along the railings, and the eejits who bought our house pulled them all out. new money!

Yes, these are the only kind of roses in my book! The tight ugly little roses at the supermarket are so depressing! Especially love those parrot striped roses at the top - BEAUTIFUL!

I have been longing to find an old-fashioned rose called Henri IV, I think. It was an early 1800s rose, I think, and changable in color, like an old bruise. Oh, it was lovely and strange.

AL - it might be one of four -
1. a gallica, 1816, bred by Vibert
2. a damask, bred by Trebucien (prior to 1829)
3. a hybrid perpetual, 1862 bred by Verdier
4. a hybrid perpetual, 1847 bred by Vibert

By the colour, I think it is no.2
1 & 3 are grown but are more pink/red coloured.

I saw the title of your post (VD)and thought I would be reading about the dangers of contracting a venereal disease on Valentines Day! Thankfully I enjoyed your beautiful roses instead. Happy VD
