Somehow we have managed to skip spring

And have gone straight into summer. I for one hate summer. For so many reasons. Not least of all because all and sundry feel at liberty to:

1. Put their ugly (and more oft than not, this is an insult to ugly) trotters into a pair of flip flops, or, my all time favourite, a pair of Birkenstocks.
2. Wear unconsrtucted and all too unflattering "summer" clothes.
3. Eat as they walk along.

One could understand if this were a seaside resort or one of those summer towns. It's not. It's L O N D O N. This is probably just a reflection of my very colonial upbringing, but it all just a bit too shanty town for me.

Flogging's too good for them.

Why is this degree of self respect and respect for others so elusive to those who reside it what is considered to be the developed world?

Bravo! I totally agree. I think that flip-flops anyplace but at the beach should be banned. Especially in cities! It's just a filthy habit! Casual's one thing. Sloppy is entirely different.

Ha! I'm with you on the Birkenstocks, but what is with the latest casual shoe craze - Crocs. They are HIDEOUS! No self-respecting human would be caught dead in a pair of those things. They are for under 10's only!

yes! Yes! YES! Forgive me for the outburst. Remaining elegant in the heat and humidity is difficult, but when the tastemakers in the major cities go Borneo, who among us has the ghost of a chance? To say nothing of the imprint on our young.

Fresco cloth, linen, sundresses, sandals, white shoes, please. As you say, if it's that easy in the islands, where and why do we go so wrong?

I love warm weather, but generally loathe summer clothes. Everything feels flimsy and unflattering, but it is hard to get around wearing such things in Hotlanta. You can't even wear make-up here from June to September.

I so agree with you on this subject. In Thailand very few Thais wear sloppy or skimpy attire in the city (Bangkok), and it is such a painful embarrassment to see the way tourists dress, as if they were at the beach. And the Brits are some of the worst, I have to confess.
