A green and pleasant land

Perfect English by Ros Byam Shaw with photographs by Chris Tubbs.
Described aptly as the "English style of decoration is practical and informal, designed around the people who occupy the rooms rather than to impress. These houses are lived in and loved, with interiors that are relaxed and not afraid to be pretty."
An obvious, but oft neglected, tenet of decorating.

I must get this book! If only more people would design their homes for themselves rather than for others.

Wow... and love the quote. we sang Jerusalem at dad's funeral, but the church screwed up and used the american words, not the green and pleasant land words, so no-one knew why we played it.

I knew from the minute I read your Pigtown Pigout - we would get each other. I'd lay money on it - that no one else, or very few, got that reference. I love those words... Bring me my chariot of fire! Has always been my favourite line.

I have the Rick Wakeman version... I love the whole poem. There's a version on youtube with slides that just kills me. includes the pub jerusalem where we first went with dad.

on a happier note, i am glad i didn't post your package today because i found an additional goodie for you at book thing, and a book for mrs. blandings, too.

Thank so much for the recommendation! This looks like a fab book and I love the idea of "lived-in" images because it's often the opposite.

God, that is a fabulous album. I haven't heard it in a long time. Did you ever read her autobiography? fascinating.

That quote really resonates with me! I call my decorating business Interiors for Living for exactly those reasons: so I can help clients create beautiful spaces they can truly live in. Thanks for letting us know about this book!
