Let's talk dado rails

David Hicks via The Peak of Chic

Imagine if David Hicks had painted the wall section beneath the dado rail the same colour as the section above. Dreadful, no? And yet, this is something I have been seeing lately, rooms done with bright white dado rails. Either remove the dado rail or limit the dominant colour to the area above. Unless of course, one likes the idea of having one's room wearing a white belt. No? I didn't think so.

I hope that on the otherwise excellent no-color-below-the-belt rule, you'll grant a special dispensation for Robert Adam, the only man I know who could make Shocking Pink pants look chic.

magnaverde — magnificent!
I don't object to colour below the belt (love the phrase) at all. What I object to is the thin white line awkwardly bisecting what should be a uniform field of colour in a room with, what is probably, an already too low ceiling.

The thin white belt line reminds me bad old man seventies fashion. Not good. At all.

Right you are. Like old man white Sansabelt pants, and white patent leather loafers. Ha ha ha.
And I love the way you use the word dado.

I think as you say, dado "belts" only work in rooms with the correct height, (read "original"). Worse than the white belt is the imposition of a dado in a modern building to try and create a "period" feeling, (IMHO!).
