From little acorns, great things grow

A pair of William IV oak hall chairs, circa 1835.

Victorian oak bookcase by Wilkinson & Son, the moulded cavetto cornice above three glazed doors each with carved rosettes, enclosing adjustable shelves, flanked by leaf carved spiral twist and fluted columns, the side with a door to access an integral space for maps or folios.

Victorian oak bookcase (en suite to the previous).

Furniture in oak, though not widely popular, has a certain modernity (irrespective of period) that other, more fashionable, woods do not.

It's just that there is so much oak furniture that is so very, very ugly.

[I've been trolling Craigslist the last couple of weeks. The mirror I posted on my blog was a good find though -- the owners were moving from a huge Texas house back to a flat in London.]

My fav wood is walnut. it is so warm and interesting, not to mention i have never seen walnut furniture or flooring in a color i didn't love.

oak on the other hand can be too funky for my taste , BUT i have designed and built wall units out of oak here in florida and had it limed.
liming is when there is a whitish filler in the veins of the wood, which only makes it more interesting.
limed oak is a lighter color ( blonde or beige ) and it is smashing,
i could live with an entire room with the limed oak finish on the case goods.
